Speech Delivery

Since the speech syllabus does not say whether to write our comments on our speech and delivery in Japanese or English, I will write the rest in English so that I can go into greater depth.

I thought I was going to breeze through my speech because I practiced for 2 hours and had all my lines pretty much down. I recorded the time it took to recite my speech and I consistently got about 2 minutes and 30 seconds which indicated I had nice pacing. However, when it came time to actually give it in front of the class, being the shy person I am, I froze up a little and my speech didn’t go nearly as smoothly as I had hoped. I stuttered quite a bit and at times forgot my lines for a few seconds. I even forgot that I had my note card so I didn’t even look at that when that happened!

JAPN102 Speech (LIVE from 10AM Section)

When it was over I was quite relieved that I didn’t go into some sort of panic attack. But then, the questions came…Out of the six of us who went Monday and possibly out of the whole class, it seems like I got the most questions asked. I think part of it is because of my gaming topic which some people were genuinely interested in but probably the biggest reason was because most people did not want to give their speech Monday so they tried to delay their turns it by asking a ton to me, the second to last person.

I actually liked the question-and-answer section a lot and in retrospect wish that I had Taylor-san record that too. I am pretty good at memorizing lines in Japanese given the ton of lyrics I like to memorize but actually saying them seems somewhat forced and unnatural for some reason. I like ad-libbing and making stuff up on the spot so answering the questions was quite enjoyable despite many of them being rather difficult to answer. Because of the nature of our class, I wasn’t able to nor did I want to use specialized vocabulary to describe somethings so I had an interesting time making up katakana words such as “majikku shuutaa” and “jyuru soodo.”

Overall, it wasn’t too bad but definitely could have been better.

EXTRA
Here are some bonus tracks for you to “enjoy”. The first one is a recording of my speech I did in my room, the way I had originally planned to delivery it.
JAPN102 Speech (Unpressured Ver.)

The second is some karaoke of “Smile,” a song from my favorite shoujo anime/manga Full Moon wo Sagashite. I have a karaoke version of this but I didn’t want to use it because I sound funny without Myco singing also. Anyways, have fun lol.

I know that things won’t go as smoothly as you planned when you give a speech in front of people. I have exactly the same experience! I can’t listen to your in-class speech file on my computer, but I think I thought the pacing was good!
