Summer 2010 Anime Watch List: Bracing for Absurdity

summer-2010-v1export

With the summer anime season only a week away I finally got around to compiling a list of shows that I will watch or might watch. For whatever reason I may end up following more series than I have the past couple of seasons so the list is a little big this time. As such let’s not waste time and take a look at my list right away!

Definitely Watching

Amagami SS
Thoughts: I recently finished Kimikiss which shares the same creator. I enjoyed Kimikiss so it makes my definites list by the sheer fact that it is pretty much guaranteed to entertain me. Unlike Kimikiss however Amagami is supposedly being aired in short story arcs focusing on individual heroines with no continuity between them. I’m intrigued by this novel setup since I’ve never watched anything like that but it should be interesting. I guess the drama and romance will just have to focus on individual relationships rather than a messy web of polygons.

Kuroshitsuji 2
Thoughts: I was a little late in watching the original Kuroshitsuji but I quite enjoyed it. The comedy was absurd like all butler shows should be but I also loved when it got serious and creepy. I’m expecting Kuroshitsuji 2 to be more of the same which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Did I mention it will be super gay and have Mizuki Nana as the voice of the master?

Shiki
Thoughts: Just from reading the summary I know this is my type of show. Supernatural mystery in a hospital setting!? I’m there! I’m looking forward to gathering all the clues and seeing if I can solve it myself assuming the show takes that approach.

Mitsudomoe
Thoughts: Judging by the trailers Mitsudome is Kodomo no Jikan meets Minami-ke. Since I’m a fan of both I expect some silly laughs.

Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi
Thoughts: I suppose the initial reason that I became interested in this anime was the superficial resemblance to Toradora thanks to the character designs. After looking into it more I know now that probably isn’t the case but it seems like it could be quirky fun show.

Asobi ni Iku yo!
Thoughts: Honestly I don’t actually have high expectations for this show but for some reason I really want to watch it. It’s been on my MAL Plan to Watch list since it was announced so you might guess that there surely must be some good reason, right? Not really. I was just interested in what I thought were fox ears. At least it’s being done by AIC which means it will be pleasant to look at if nothing else.

Maybe Watching

Strike Witches 2
Thoughts: The original series had it’s enjoyable moments but I didn’t exactly go crazy over it unlike a certain friend of mine. Most likely I’ll just wait and see what the internet thinks about the sequel before I decide whether or not to take the plunge.

Sengoku Basara 2
Thoughts: I recently showed the original Sengoku Basara to my anime club last semester so it’s still fresh in my mind. My feelings are pretty much the same as Strike Witches; The absurd action was enjoyable though I don’t particularly feel the I need to see the sequel. I guess it will all depend on how much my friends talk about it.

Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin
Thoughts: I’m on the fence for this. It’s being produced by A-1 which usually means I’ll enjoy it and the concept seems interesting enough. The synopses reminds me a little of xxxHOLiC which entertained me for the brief period that I read it. However it doesn’t scream watch me quite yet so I’ll take my wait and see approach.

Seitokai Yakuindomo
Thoughts: The description sounds suspiciously like Seitokai no Ichizon which is pretty much the only reason that it’s on my radar. Otherwise I detect the high possibility of generic show. If it takes a slice of life approach then I’ll try it out. If it’s mainly fanservice I’ll pass.

OVA

BLACK★ROCK SHOOTER
Thoughts: It seems like I always end up putting this OVA on my list so hopefully I’ll get to watch it this season.

ToHeart2 adnext
Thoughts: I’ve been recently converted into a To Heart fan after watching all of the anime adaptations. Can’t wait to see more Manaka and Yuuki (though Ruuko is still my favorite).

Mahou Sensei Negima! Mou Hitotsu no Sekai 4
Thoughts: [Insert rant about why I love Negima/Nodoka here]

Tales of Symphonia: Tethe’alla Hen 3
Thoughts: [Insert Tales fangasm here]

Bungaku Shoujo Memoire
Thoughts: I’m not sure whether or not I want to watch this right away or wait for the movie to be released to disk and marathon it all in one go. The story of a boy who was once a number one female author but now writing stories for a girl to eat for snacks sounds very intriguing.

Mirai Nikki
Thoughts: Honestly I’m watching this OVA for yanderekko action. Not really sure what else to expect since I never read the manga but maybe I’ll get other things to get excited about.

Hen Zemi
Thoughts: This is an anime about a college student who enrolls in a Abnormal Physiology seminar which happens to be populated by abnormal students. Sounds like it could have some nice laughs.

Movies

(That I’ll watch eventually when they come out on BD/DVD)

Hiyokoi
Thoughts: Though I didn’t read the original manga it sounds exactly like my sort of thing. I happen to like really mushy-sounding Shoujo stories like this. A small and timid girl struggling with her social skills and trying to make friends? Yes!

Mardock Scramble 1: The First Compression
Thoughts: This is one of those anime I watch because of the novelty factor. I would never have imagined there would be a movie about a murdered prostitute resurrected as a living weapon. In before I start ranting about cyborg ninjas.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 The Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer
Thoughts: Honestly I wouldn’t have watched the TV series had many of friends not been watching it. I’ll watch the movie for completions sake.

Summary

Looking back at my list I maybe watching as many as 10 new TV anime. The 7 OVAs don’t really matter since they will only be a few episodes across 3 months nor do the movies since I won’t get to watch them until this time next year probably. However factoring in the shows that I am currently watching that will continue into the upcoming season I maybe watching a lot this time around. It shouldn’t be too much of a problem since I have more free time during the summer. Then again I actually tend to watch less anime the more time I have. We’ll see how this goes.

PS: I might revert to my old format for these posts if I decide I don’t like this new one I tried.

  1. Rest assured, that “certain friend of yours” will most definitely go crazy over Strike Witches 2, plus High School of the Dead.

You know, I still haven’t watched the third Negima OAV episode. Holding out for Aquastar’s subs.

    @miki_sei: I kind of figured.

@eckstee: I’m pretty much in the same boat. Hopefully they’ll have it out before the 4th episode.

@Marius: I understand where you’re coming from. I’m especially looking forward to Koe de Oshigoto! and Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai in the fall. Kuragehime, Bakuman, Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru and Otome Youkai Zakuro also seem interesting.
