Yuri on the Chalkboard Week 57: Farewell Yuri Chalk

yuri-chalk-57-atcg

After 57 episodes, I have finally arrived at the very last edition of Yuri on the Chalkboard. Unfortunately due to some unforeseen events yesterday, I couldn’t do it normally so I had to go to my usual room early this morning to draw instead. This final iteration of Yuri Chalk is the most personal one of all, even more so than the previous two. The pair of girls pictured above are best friends Mugi and Hitomi from my personal writing project under the working title ATCG. Although not related, Hitomi’s family took Mugi in after the deaths of her parents. Hitomi and Mugi are nearly inseparable just like sisters though the both of them never admit their true feelings to each other. They are close friends with the protagonist and Samantha making up the core cast of the first arc in my story. Anyway you can read a excerpt from the rough draft below if you want:

“Now that everyone’s here and relaxed let’s get started with today’s business” Hitomi addresses us.

“Tell us! Tell us!” Sam exclaims excitedly.

“As we all know a new year and a new semester has started which mean it’s time to start thinking of how to better ourselves for the new challenges we must face. I mean of course the new spring fashions!”

Sam has a smirk on her face while Mugi has an expression of embarrassment.

“It’s important to have Mugi looking her best wherever she goes so this weekend we’ll be taking an expedition to the shopping arcade in search of cosmetics and clothing!”

Hitomi’s in her own world now and there’s no stopping her.

“Let’s go over the game plan first. We’ll meet up at our house and walk over to the LOOP station and take it to the shopping district.”

Somehow this seems way more convenient for them than it does for me.

“We’ll hit up the usual stores and look for the best looking outfits and accessories. Afterward we can even go have a bite. You’ll try on some clothes too, right Dai?”

“I think I’ll pass. Shopping for clothes is a spectator sport.”

“Oh but you don’t want to try on some pretty dresses?” Sam asks in a pouty voice. “You’d look fabulous in a summer dress and coral lipstick.”

“No way!”

“But you used to like doing it as a kid!”

“That’s because you used to bully me into it. And hey, didn’t I say we would never mention this!” I scream out as I pin her into a headlock. I know this is futile as she breaks free. We quit before it get serious but it’s not something I like to talk about. Before long it’s time for Sam to head off to work. I stick around a little longer until it gets dark before deciding to make my leave.

At the beginning it is very slice of life comedy but quickly spirals into the realm of sci-fi. It’s kind of hard to describe it anymore without just posting the story online. Unfortunately I haven’t completed it yet so cannot do so but hopefully I can make some more progress soon. The story has been floating around inside my head so long that it has really taken on a life of its own. I need to put it down in writing before I go crazy!

With this my duties as my anime club’s Director are finally at an end. These 3.5 years have been incredible. For anyone in my club reading this, please do not pick up this tradition again and to instead find a new one. Thank you so much everyone!

Anime Survey Says…

hidamari-game-show
[Source]

A week and a half ago, I asked my fellow otaku to answer a simple survey so that I could attempt to do an anime-themed version of the classic game show Family Feud and 149 of you answered the call. After playing it in my club last night I can finally reveal the results to the general public. This post is divided into 10 main sections plus 1 more for other thoughts. Each of the 10 main sections start with the question followed by the number of total responses and the top 7 or 8 responses in block quotes. My thoughts and other interesting responses that did not meet the top 7 or 8 threshold are presented afterward. All numbers are shown as raw data without the normalization we applied for scoring. Responses in bold were guessed correctly while those marked by an asterisk (*) were removed for technical reasons which will be discussed in the other thoughts section. One thing to keep in mind is that many of the questions were designed to test two things: What people would answer and how people would interpret the questions. With that said, let’s take a look at the results!

Project Precure

[Source]

I’ve always wanted to watch the Precure franchise ever since the original first aired but I never got an opportunity to since this was before I got high-speed internet. Even when I did get it, the episode count had grown to the point that it was intimidating just to think about watching it. However after a little advice I decided to take the plunge a couple of weeks ago to watch all of the series starting with Suite Precure. This is without a doubt the largest anime watching project I’ve ever had and at this point I may be partly insane. I’ve even sidelined all but currently airing anime to make room for all of the Precure.

The original plan was to work my way backwards in time starting from Suite Precure and finishing off with Futari wa Precure and Max Heart. However I somehow or another got the idea to instead watch all of the six non-sequel series concurrently. So far I’ve managed to watch at least 8 episodes of each of them so as to keep up with Suite‘s current episode. To put it another way I could have finished a single Precure series already if I had concentrated all of those episodes into one show. However I do not regret my spread watching method since it gives me a good look into all the Precures. Individual initial impressions for each series below followed by my overall thoughts:

Help an Otaku by Taking a Survey

genshiken-cast

I’m currently working on an anime-themed version of the game show Family Feud for my university’s anime club. For those unfamiliar with the game, two teams compete against each other in a contest to name the most popular responses to a survey-type question posed to 100 people. Right now I need your help to complete my project! The survey is only ten questions long and should only take a couple of minutes to complete. Your answers will not be tied to you personally though I may publish a summary of the results in the future. I would really appreciate it if you would take this survey! Also please feel free to share it with your friends!

[The Survey Link]
EDIT: Original SurveyMonkey link removed. Please use the above link to Kwik Surveys instead.

For those in my club, I’m trusting you guys not to look at the survey ahead of time.

EDIT2: Poll’s closed. Thanks for all the help!

Lighting Up the Stage

I know it has been quiet here on Lyrical☆Spark! lately and I would like to apologize to all of my dedicated readers, followers and fans. As much as I would like to get back to posting my usual otaku-related ramblings and song translations, I can’t make any concrete promises as to when that’ll happen just yet. Many things have been going on offline that it has been making my head spin round and round. Between the graduation preparations, job searching and taking care of unfinished business, life has been quite hectic but just when I thought things couldn’t get any crazier, the most unexpected thing happened.

Spring 2011 Anime Overload

It’s been a long while coming but finally here is me and Aorii‘s spring season preview post! We’ve spent quite a bit of time on it especially since we also presented it to our anime club the other day (You can download our presentation here). I was already excited before I started doing researching reading manga and such but after doing so I went completely insane. With the possibility of watching up to 16 television series (not including Fireball Charming since I don’t think that counts) I might actually die from an overdose of anime. This list is stupidly long so without further ado let’s go!
