According to Natalie, new Youkai manga “Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni (At Night When the Amaryllis Bloom)” by Higurashi creator Ryukishi07 starts serialization in Dragon Age magazine’s May issue on sale April 9th. The art will be handled by newcomer mangaka Tsunohazu Ichiro. The story will be about the popular urban legend “The Seven Mysteries at School” and a rumor about the eighth mystery “Mesomeso-san.”
With only a month until released I’m pretty much obligated to be excited. Hopefully I can find scans of it to read but that probably shouldn’t be too hard with Ryukisshi’s fame. Of course this is being serialized in a monthly magazine so it’ll take forever to go anywhere.
My question is what kind of story will it be? There’s always the default assumption of mystery but that’s not necessarily the case. I’m certain there will still be mystery elements but that doesn’t mean it will be the main focus. Just a random observation that probably means nothing but I like how the title follows Ryukishi’s normal naming convention–(noun) no (verb) (time period) ni.
Anyway whenever I hear youkai I think of Touhou which Ryukishi07 is definitely a fan of. Remember that scene from the beginning of Umineko Episode 2 when Kanon goes to the culture festival at Jessica’s school and she cosplays Marisa while belting out “Tsurupettan?” What if that was actually Marisa rocking out with an an assortment of youkai? Yeah that would be fun to read about humans discovering youkai at school and befriending “exterminating” them. That’s probably too much of a fanciful stretch but I’ll be looking forward to Higanbana no Saku Yoru ni regardless of what it ends up being.
After something like over 2 weeks since the release of Firefox 3.6 I finally got around to upgrading. If it weren’t for a friend telling me I wouldn’t have known since Firefox never did notify me that an update was available. Anyway the big thing with this update is the introduction of Personas which are kind of like themes. Of course the first thing I did after the update was to search for some otaku-related ones on the Personas for Firefox site. There are a decent number available but most of them are not that great. I also wish people tagged their personas better so that I can actually search the database easier. Of the ones I stumbled upon I found a dozen decent ones to use. Read the rest of this entry »
While Aorii was readying the hotpot to eat last night I went outside to get something. Seeing the sparkling snow I had an idea. I went to my room and got the Cirno plushie I got the other afternoon and started putting her in the snow and taking some pictures. The way the flash reflects off the ice crystals while keeping most of the photo dark looks so nice. Read the rest of this entry »
Today one of the supposedly most severe snowstorms in the state’s recent memory started. Something like 20 inches is expected to fall which considering the average for the region is quite high so a rare thing happened. UVA is kind of famous amongst us students as being very stingy in regards to holidays. We never have any days off except for the basic ones that it can’t get away with like Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday and Thanksgiving. Unexpectedly the university canceled classes today which has only happened very rarely in the past few decades. Read the rest of this entry »
Exactly two years ago I posted “my ideal family” if it were to consist of anime, manga and game characters. Basically the idea came to me when I stumbled on an amazing thread randomly in which people would post a list of characters to form a family. Think of Kyouran Kazoku Nikki and that’s pretty much the basic premise. I found the idea so amusing that I started seriously thinking about it and after some major contemplation I posted my list a few days later. Suddenly two years have passed and I’ve finally gotten around to updating my family roster. I’ve been planning to redo it for a while since I have an even bigger “gene pool” from which to select family members from. The list is divided into the family I grew up with and the family I raise as an adult. Continue on for some strange shenanigans. Read the rest of this entry »
Today my Western Digital external hard drive which I affectionately named Shanghai died. She wasn’t the best model when I got her but for almost five years she has served me well. Last night she started making the dreaded click of death but before I could back up my data she failed catastrophically. Luckily most of my data is stored elsewhere but still I lost some of my recent music and anime. I don’t know what I would be doing now had I lost the majority of my music or especially my artwork but in any case I’m just thankful. I had planned on marathoning some anime such as White Album 2nd Season but that has to wait until later. Now the task of trying to repair the damage begins. Technically I still have plenty of space on my other drives but I may eventually get a new one to replace Shanghai purely for backups or possibly for a RAID 1 array. I’d rather not spend more money on unplanned purchases but considering that two died on me recently (Hourai and now Shanghai) I may have no other choice. I’d need another 1TB to feel comfortable or a 2TB for total data backup. I suppose my purchase of “Hina” will come much sooner than later. *sigh*
If I didn’t think it looked horribly wordy I would have subtitled this post “Stepping into a past decade before exiting the current one” or something similar. Thanks to Shance I rediscovered the Anime Otaku-ness Test 200, a 200 question assessment of one’s otaku power-level. The test is terribly out-of-date but I think it is a good primer for letting people get to know me a little better. I’ve taken a few of the more interesting questions for me and explained my answers right here. I hope this will be a pleasant insight into who I am. Read the rest of this entry »
Not feeling like doing much in the day preceding my Thanksgiving holiday I spent a good chunk of time watching Touhou videos yesterday. I haven’t really watched any in quite a while so it reminded me why I love them so much. Below are some of the ones I watched in no particular order. Read the rest of this entry »
For the past 3 days I’ve been missing in action on the internets due to Nekocon 12. After getting tired of not ever going to conventions with my friends I decided this year that I would finally go to one. Though my wallet is aching in the end it was definitely worth the price and time I paid. Get ready for a ridiculously long write up of my Nekocon adventure. Read the rest of this entry »
Last December I wrote that I got Gift’sFumoFumo Touhou Plushie Reimu and Marisa. Nearly half-a-year later I have finally gotten more Touhous to add to my collection. To be precise I received FumoFumo Alice, Patchouli, Remilia and Sakuya this afternoon. I was originally supposed to get Remilia and Sakuya in February but Toys Logic failed incredibly hard despite my early pre-order so I once again turned to Shopping Mall Japan to help me snag them at Yahoo Auctions Japan. I got Remi, Sakuya, Alice and Patchy for about 7000 yen per pair which is close to retail price and after fees and shipping about the same price I would have paid at Toys Logic so in the end it worked out. (There are a few things that Toys Logic offers that other sites don’t that I’m interested in such as the Saki Mahjong Set but I’ll be wary the next time I try to order from them).
Unfortunately I’m still missing Flandre from my collection since I ran out of money. Hopefully I’ll add Flan later. There’s also a giant version of the Reimu Plushie but I’d rather save my money for possibly more of the regular-sized ones assuming Gift continues to release more.
